Microglia are the major resident immuno competent and phagocytic cells in CNS. Astrocytes also perform an important purpose in regulating inflammation from the CNS. LPS is capable of inducing production of pro inflamma tory cytokines and NO in both microglia and astrocytes. Our review shows that LPS substantially induces the expression and manufacturing of pro inflamma tory cytokines, and enhances the expression of iNOS and production of NO, by major microglia and main astrocytes. N9 cells expressed pro inflammatory cytokines and iNOs in the mRNA degree in response to LPS in a pattern related to that of principal microglia. These results indicate that the inflammatory responses of microglial cell and astro cyte to LPS are equivalent.
